Lou Guan Tai,--Xi an Attractions
Lou Guan Tai, also named Lou Guan Tai Forest Park, is situated in the southeast of Zhouzhi County, Xi'an, along the North Zhongnan Mountain Range. It enjoys the name of 'the Luckiest Place in the World' not only for its historic remains, but also for its beautiful forest landscape. Lou Guan Tai Forest Park is among the earliest in the system of national forest parks in China, The system began to take shape in 1982. Now, Lou Guan Tai receives large number of domestic and foreign tourists annually.
With area of 27,500 hectares (about 68,000 acres), over fifty sites have been opened to the public. They are divided into three main categories: plants, animals and historic relics.
Firstly, surrounded by green hills and crystal rivers, Lou Guan Tai is famous for its abundant forest resource. Also, it has ancient, elegant, secluded and unusual landscapes. There are over 1,000 species of woody plants and herbaceous plants in the park. For example, there is Bai Zhu Yuan, the largest bamboo plantation in North China, with luxuriant kinds of bamboos. And Bai HuaYuan, a garden with hundreds of flowers, has more than 300 kinds of rare flowers and trees.
Secondly, Lou Guan Tai has animal houses for vulnerable and endangered species, including national treasures of China, such as the giant panda, the golden-haired monkey and the takin, a kind of goat-antelope living around Qinling Mountain. Zhen Shou Guan, an exhibition hall of vulnerable and endangered species, has more than 600 animals under first-class and second-class state protection. So it contributes a great deal towards protecting precious wild animals in China.
Lastly but the most importantly, Lou Guan Tai played a major role in developing Taoism, one of the most popular religions in Chinese history, and it occupies the most ideal site for the practice of Taoism. Lao Zi wrote the Tao Te Ching here 3,000 years ago. Lao Zi - his real name is Li Er - was an ancient Chinese philosopher who lived in the Kingdom of Chu during the Spring and Autumn Era. He has been regarded as the founder of Taoism and the teacher of Confucius. Tao Te Ching is a short text of around five thousand Chinese characters in 81 chapters, and it is fundamental to the Philosophy of Taoism. Confucius (551BC-479 BC) was a thinker, political figure, educator, and founder of Confucianism.
In addition, Lou Guan Tai is near to Chang'an, the capital of thirteen Dynasties in Chinese history. So it was favored by many ancient celebrities such as emperors and poets. There are more than 170 stone tablets, 150 poetry works of notable personages and many popular legends.
The famous historic remains are Lao-zi Hall, Star Observation Tower, and Jiang Jing Tai - a sign renders this phrase as the 'pulpit', where Lao zi preached his Taoist ideas, and Liandanfeng, a place for practice of alchemy, where Lord Lao Zi made and kept the elixir (Chinese legends go that it would perpetuate life without caducity or change people into celestial beings).
