Built in 1777 by Heshen, one of the most corrupt officials of the Qianlong period, and later home to Prince Gong, this compound is a textbook example of a noble’s mansion during the Qing dynasty. Prince Gong was the younger brother of the Xianfeng emperor (1850-1861)and played a key role in helping the Empress Dowager assume power upon Xianfeng’s death. The strange rock garden and massive lily pond have none of the delicate subtleties of the gardens in Hangzhou or Suzhou.
Peking opera performances in the theater with requisite tea sipping and seed cracking are part of the guided RMB60package tour, though the regular RMB 20entrance ticket allows for strolling at your own pace.
